Having recently seduced live audiences as part of Laneway Festival in Australia, Melbourne’s CITY CALM DOWN have revealed their new single JOAN, I’M DISAPPEARING. It’s the second single to come from the band’s highly anticipated second album, ECHOES IN BLUE, which is due for release on 6 April 2018.

Of the new single, front man Jack Bourke commented, “Joan is about coming to terms with the dissolution of a long-term relationship and how neglect ultimately led to its breakdown”.

Two years on from their surefooted debut, IN A RESTLESS HOUSE, Jack Bourke [vocals] Sam Mullaly [synths and keyboards] Jeremy Sonnenberg [bass] and Lee Armstrong [drums and percussion] have consolidated their strengths and stretched their horizons for ECHOES IN BLUE.

Recorded in Melbourne with producer and long-time collaborator Malcolm Besley, the new album explores the emotional idiosyncrasies of our modern changing world, rendered in glistening keyboards, chugging guitars and triumphant horns.

ECHOES IN BLUE is CITY CALM DOWN’s most sweeping, universal material to date. Anchoring the album’s epic pop drive is the band’s accomplished song writing, which catalogues the mounting anxieties of our age with an unflinching eye. As more of our daily life becomes pressurised to meet endless round-the-clock demands, CITY CALM DOWN meditate on what’s being lost in translation and why it matters.

Speaking about the album, Jack Bourke adds: “Echoes in Blue is not concerned with answering questions as much as it is asking them. It is interested in the reality of being spread too thin, of being unable to shut out the noise, where we’re told to buy a house with a mountain of debt. Do we do what we love? To be passionate and driven, whilst making enough time for our wife or husband, for our boyfriend or girlfriend, for our children, parents and friends? Has life ever been more exciting or more artificial? Why are we so connected yet feel so alone? Perhaps, in all this excitement, we forget to be bored and forget to examine ourselves a little more closely. Or maybe we should just embrace the rage?”

The new single, JOAN, I’M DISAPPEARING, follows on perfectly from the release of THIS MODERN LAND late last year, which gave an exciting taste of what’s to come from their second full release

CITY CALM DOWN will return to return to the UK and Europe in May for an extensive string of shows that will see them perform multiple times at this year’s Great Escape Festival in Brighton and Gold Sounds Festival in Leeds.

CITY CALM DOWN have announced the incredible video for IN THIS MODERN LAND

Melbourne four-piece  have revealed their new single, In This Modern Land. You can listen to it here:

I OH YOU Records are thrilled to announce IN THIS MODERN LAND, the new single from Melbourne four-piece CITY CALM DOWN, and the latest track to be revealed from the band’s highly anticipated second album.

Two years on from their debut, IN A RESTLESS HOUSE, Jack Bourke [vocals] Jeremy Sonnenberg [bass] Sam Mullaly [synths / keyboards] and Lee Armstrong [drums / percussion] return with the band’s latest offering; soaring synths and horns; an exuberant and bold crescendo; and all cemented by Bourke’s striking, unmistakable baritone. As heavy and haunted as your conscience.

During IN THIS MODERN LAND, front man Bourke adopts the perspective of a person coming to terms with, and perhaps embracing, their own social isolation. Contrasted with the soaring instrumentation and melodies, the lyrics highlight the growing disconnect between Bourke and his surroundings.

Since the band’s early MOVEMENTS EP and their acclaimed 2015 debut, CITY CALM DOWN have paved the way for their forthcoming second album – which will see a worldwide release in early 2018 – with a run of singles achieving over four million streams, multiple spots on Hype Machine, spins on Beats 1, high rotation radio, and a coveted Feature Album on the Australian broadcaster Triple J. The band’s strengths – intricate, irresistible synth and guitar hooks, soaring yet melancholic choruses – have earned accolades from the likes of NME, Stereogum, Consequence of Sound, Indie Shuffle and more.

Recorded in Melbourne with long-time producer Malcolm Beasley, expect an album that explores the emotional idiosyncrasies of our modern, changing world, rendered in glistening keyboards, chugging guitars and triumphant horns. As vocalist Jack Bourke says of the forthcoming album:

“With this album, we wanted to introduce new musical ideas whilst retaining the many production qualities and tensions present on IN A RESTLESS HOUSE. It was difficult getting the balance right between stepping too far to the left and repeating ourselves. We certainly learned a lot as a group.”

With multiple sold-out tours and appearances at major festivals, CITY CALM DOWN have also performed with ALT-J, CHVRCHES, BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB and more, and in February 2018 they will undertake another national Australian trek as part of the Laneway Festival alongside the likes of DREAM WIFE, FATHER JOHN MISTY, SLOWDIVE, THE WAR ON DRUGS and WOLF ALICE.

Before then, in celebration of the new single, CITY CALM DOWN visit the UK  this month, as follows:
