Lindi Ortega has unveiled the video for "Liberty", the title track from her forthcoming three-part concept album which will be released May 25th on Shadowbox Music exclusively licensed via Soundly Music. Shot in Nashville and directed by Travis Nicholson, executive producer on CMT’s ‘Still the King’, the atmospheric video pays tribute to old Western movies but with a modern twist. “It was important for me that we had wild horses in the video because, for me, wild horses represent ultimate freedom and liberation, as well as physical strength and beauty,” says Ortega, who recently spoke to the BBC about her her experience with Body Dysmorphic Disorder, which she wrote about movingly for Lenny Letter.
Already released in North America to some of the best reviews of Ortega’s career, ‘Liberty’ also contains the tracks "You Ain't Foolin' Me", "The Comeback Kid" (“…a dramatic, reverb-heavy tune that sounds like it could be the plot of a Quentin Tarantino-directed spaghetti western” Rolling Stone Country) and "Lovers In Love" (“sweet ode to redemptive love” The Boot)
‘Liberty’ was recorded at Battle Tapes studio in Nashville and produced by Skylar Wilson (Justin Townes Earle, Rayland Baxter). The album scales back the boot-stomping, throwback country approach that she's known for, instead polishing a set of music that reflects her Mexican lineage. Ortega and Wilson - who first bonded over their shared passion for Quentin Tarantino movies - enhanced the sonic landscape with the help of Country Music Hall of Fame member Charlie McCoy's signature harmonica and Nashville-based band Steelism, drawing on the epic work of Oscar-winning composer Ennio Morricone, who became one of Ortega's musical obsessions during the writing and recording of 'Liberty.' Ortega wrote roughly half of the twelve tracks solo, and enlisted co-writers Aaron Raitiere, Bruce Wallace and John Paul White (The Civil Wars) for the rest. The result is a three-part concept album reflecting loss, séance, resurrection and freedom.
Ortega will soon embark on an extensive world tour in support of ‘Liberty’, reaching the UK in early June. In addition to her headline dates, she will support GRAMMY award-winner Jason Isbell and his band The 400 Unit on several dates of his European tour:
