Following the explosive punk of “38 Minutes”, the ambient title-track “The Story Is…”, and the New Wave fizz of “My Distraction”, “Rattle & Roar” arrives as another sonic curveball to any listener trying to guess how this Story will end when the album drops on 1st March 2019 (via Xtra Mile Recordings).
Harking back to the band’s earnest beginnings as intrepid folk-roots revivalists, “Rattle & Roar”, is a rum-slugging, foot-stomping, good-time tune. A souped-up shanty that wouldn’t sound amiss if sung from lungs of any crew heartily navigating the seven-seas, Skinny Lister it seems found inspiration for their latest track in the most fitting of situations. As Daniel Heptinstall of the band explains:
“From ‘John Kanaka’, via ‘Raise A Wreck’ and ‘Beat It From The Chest’, we’ve always been keen to include a shanty element on our albums. Singing sea shanties in our local folk club is a big part of the band’s early history. “Rattle & Roar” though, was actually written while on board Flogging Molly’s Salty Dog Cruise last year - a great punk rock festival on a boat that sails around the Bahamas. I like to feel this has infused the track with some extra saltiness!”
A premier piece of procrastination-inspired power-pop goodness, ‘My Distraction’ finds its touch points in the angular and playful sounds comparable to Blondie or The Jam at their peak. A new-wave flecked, sugar-coated thrill clocking in at just over the two-and-a half-minute mark, the single is the latest cut to be lifted from the band’s highly anticipated new album: ’The Story Is…’ (out 1st March 2019, on Xtra Mile Recordings).
On typically fun-loving form, ‘My Distraction’ is of course companioned with a wonderfully tongue-in-cheek new video that sees the band playing on the track’s themes of our tech-binging addictions. In scenes perhaps best described as ‘GoggleBox meets Star Trek’, the video finds frontwoman Lorna Thomas unexpectedly transported across space and time at the hands of her TV remote…
Offering further insight into the themes of the new single, Skinny’s Dan & Lorna say:
“’My Distraction’ is about being so obsessed with something that everything else falls by the wayside. When only one thing is in focus and everything else is merely background noise. Even though written initially with broader meaning, the lyrics are particularly fitting for our current fixation with modern technology and, even more particularly, our tethering of ourselves to our smart phones.”
As with the rest of the upcoming long-player, “The Story Is…” was recorded, produced and mixed with the highly capable Barny Barnicott (Arctic Monkeys, The Enemy, The Temper Trap). In the
deep, dark hours of one particular alcohol fuelled studio late night session, Barnicott introduced the band to an old piano and a set of pitched bells and tubes. Quickly striking upon the chiming
soundscapes now available at their finger tips, the band began to get experimental with their electric guitars, uniquely marrying the two to create the entrancing, ethereal melody that defines the
backdrop of this irresistible new single.
“The Story Is…” arrives as the second single to be taken from Skinny Lister’s upcoming studio album of the same name, and directly follows previous single “38 Minutes”.
A loosely-based concept album, ‘The Story Is…’ anthologises a series of personal vignettes inspired by a chaotic few years for the band and binds them into 14 tracks of unmistakably
Skinny-sounding rock’n’roll. Gather-in close and lend your ears as Skinny Lister rifle through ‘The Story Is…’ and pull out: scorched stories of aggravated arsonists (‘Artist Arsonist’), rib-tickling
tales of regretful re-fuellings (‘Diesel Vehicle’), and even polemic pleas inspired by some of life’s hardest lessons (‘Stop & Breathe’).
’The Story is…’ is released via Xtra Mile Recordings on 1st March 2019.
With one of the most reputable live shows in the business (hailed as “a deafening and visceral experience” - The Independent, 5/5), Skinny Lister will also be touring ‘The Story Is…’ with a series of their tenacious live shows across the UK & Europe in 2019.
Take it as a forewarning, for the London sextet today also lay out the incendiary plans for their long-awaited fourth studio album: ‘The Story Is….’, a record set to drop from Xtra Mile Recordings silo on 1st March 2019.
Lead single “38 Minutes” is a tense new track inspired by a ballistic missile alert triggered in Hawaii at the beginning of 2018. For a terrifying 38 minutes officials led the populous of the volcanic island to believe that the end was nigh. As sirens wailed and panic prevailed, the locals were starkly informed: “This Is Not A Drill”…
But it was of course, just that. Whilst it might not go down as a red letter day for the Hawaiian authorities, Skinny Lister fans can rejoice as this episode arrives transformed some months later into an ebullient new single “38 Minutes” and the first to emerge of many stories that make up their imaginative new album ‘The Story Is…’ .
If Skinny Lister’s intriguingly titled new album sounds like something of pick’n’mix of assorted tales ready to share with you, well that’s because it is. A loosely-based concept album, ‘The Story Is…’ anthologises a series of personal vignettes inspired by a chaotic few years for the band and binds them into 14 tracks of unmistakably Skinny-sounding rock’n’roll.

From tales inspired by the minutiae of our day-to-day lives to paranoid ruminations of impending apocalypse, ‘The Story Is…’, sees Skinny Lister deliver their most lyrically and conceptually complex offering to date. Coupled with a veritable sonic smorgasbord of new sounds and songcraft, there are plenty of tell-tale signs that ring true of a band on stimulated form and at the top of their game. From the new wave nuances of The Jam’s classic output (‘Cause for Chorus’) to vintage ska-janglings (‘Second Amendment’), not to mention lashings of the band’s trademarkedly barnstorming folk-punk too (‘Rattle & Roar’, ‘Sometimes So It Goes’), the sextet’s latest release not only sees them expand their horizons but arguably finds them in the most potent pop form of their career.
